5. In Big Day, pigs Prissy and Pop go to the beach--after a few Prissy-initiated detours that frustrate Pop. In Halls, Prissy and Pop trim the tree, make cookies, and otherwise prepare for Santa's visit. The texts amount to not so much stories as blatant marketing opportunities to showcase author Nicholson's Instagram-famous pets modeling various costumes in full-page color photos. Review covers the following titles: Prissy & Pop: Big Day Out and Prissy & Pop Deck the Halls. nb. 32pg. THE HORN BOOK, c2017.
Kirkus Reviews | 09/01/2016
Miniature pigs celebrate the Christmas holiday together in a story illustrated with photographs of the pampered porcine pair. Prissy and Pop are pets who live in Florida with their owner, a first-grade teacher. The micro-pigs have their own Instagram account, stuffed pig toys named for them, and now their own book series. This holiday offering is the second, following Prissy & Pop: Big Day Out (2016). The two pigs are photographed in costumes as they decorate their Christmas tree, bake holiday treats, and sing carols on Christmas Eve before hanging up their stockings. On Christmas morning they pose in matching red pajamas in front of piles of presents. The photographs are slickly professional, and the design places a full-page photo opposite a text block set against red or green backgrounds on each double-page spread. The costumes and props are all cheerfully Christmas-y, and the piggies are undeniably cute. The text, however, is mostly just description of the activities in the photographs, with unconvincing dialogue and lame jokes as well. ("Hooves crossed!"). The dialogue is forced and determinedly upbeat, with lots of exclamation marks. (" 'It's a winter wonderland!' cries Prissy.") There is no real plot to speak of. No silk purse here, just four little piggie ears. (Picture book. 3-7). 32pg. KIRKUS MEDIA LLC, c2016.

Ages 4-8. Miniature pigs Priscilla and Poppleton, who star in an Instagram account run by Nicholson with more than 600,000 followers, appear in a series of holiday-themed photographs that trace the lead-up to Christmas. "You know what we should do first?" suggests Pop. "Trim the tree," Prissy replies as the two are shown in front of a small artificial tree with ornaments scattered across the carpet. Dressed in red-and-green holiday finery, the two pigs pose in front of mixing bowls, punch bowls, and popcorn bowls, as well as a gingerbread house, fireplace, and dangling paper snowflakes, as they appear to take part in an array of holiday traditions. The banter between the pigs can feel almost perfunctory next to the adorable photographs, but readers not charmed by these expressive pigs might want to check that their hearts aren't made of coal. Agent: Andrew Stuart, Stuart Agency. (Sept.). 32p. PUBLISHERS WEEKLY, c2016.

PreS-Gr 2. Instagram stars Prissy and Pop are miniature pigs, and this cute story has them getting ready for Christmas. Dressed in adorable sweaters, dresses, and onesies, these real animals stand next to props to look like they are baking cookies, practicing "Jingle Bells," cutting out paper snowflakes, and generally anticipating Santa's arrival. Pages opposite the stylized photographs describe the pigs' speech and actions at length. On Christmas morning, Prissy and Pop open many presents but proclaim that they are each other's best gift. VERDICT Because the narrative is centered on images meant to elicit an "awwww," the story is hardly memorable, but pig lovers will get a kick out of this stocking stuffer. Rita Law, Los Angeles Public Library. 32p. SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL, c2016.
