What business could two men have digging a grave in a state park? Birdwatcher Cassandra Randall vows to find out, and reluctant federal prosecutor Nick Davis quickly finds even more trouble than Cassandra imagined as Davis chases a criminal through the seedy world of thieves-turned-murderers, child pornographers, domestic abuse perpetrators, and the legal system, itself. Davis has no idea just how close the criminal is... Debut Novel, 368pp., 100K, Auth res: AK

In Goodman's stellar first novel, a legal thriller, 53-year-old federal prosecutor Nick Davis is beguiled by Cassandra Randall, an attractive birdwatcher who happens to have witnessed a surreptitious burial in an unnamed state park that could be in New England. Cassandra guides the authorities to the site, where they unearth the body of a young man, who turns out to be "a shy and likable kid who was selling pot to pay his college tuition." More deaths follow. Nick, who heads the criminal division of his district's U.S. Attorney's office, turns for help to such distinctive supporting characters as his world-weary FBI agent friend, Chip d'Villafranca, and colleague Upton Cruthers, his probable successor if Nick gets a Circuit Court judgeship. A "rotten summer" of killings turns into a bitter autumn of self-doubt for Nick, who wrestles with both the prosecutor's sin, failure of objectivity, and the defender's, failure of loyalty. Nick knows that he must hold fast to the law, until he learns the cost. Agent: Janet Reid, FinePrint Literary Management. (June). 368p. PUBLISHERS WEEKLY, c2014.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Nick Davis, in a moment of weak parenting, decides to take his teenage daughter, Lizzie, along to a possible grave-site search in the woods. In a nice departure from the usual teenage-girl angst, Lizzie is mature and kind, and has a close relationship with her father. Nick doesn't expect to find anything on this venture, but a body does turn up, and the bird-watcher who reported it is killed. A couple of drug dealers are the main suspects, but the story twists further when more bodies are found. As the case develops, Nick starts to suspect some of his own coworkers, prompting an attack of serious paranoia. In a bizarre twist, Nick's most ardent opponent, a pugnacious defense attorney, becomes his sounding board and counsel. Nick has always put his faith in the justice system, but this case truly tests him, and he finds himself reexamining his own beliefs and those of almost everyone around him. Attorney Goodman easily makes the transition to fiction writer, as have his brethren Scott Turow and John Lescroart. Alesi, Stacy. 354p. AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION, c2014.

Nick Davis, an assistant U.S. attorney, has been fortunate throughout his career by being in the right place at the right time. His personal life has been less lucky, and now with an appointment to the U.S. Circuit Court on the line, a messy case involving four murders rears its ugly head and his private life becomes entangled with his work. As Nick tries to sort out the good guys from the bad guys, he begins to realize that the law is less rational than he previously thought and sees that his role of applying the law as written is not wholly objective either. VERDICT Goldman's debut legal thriller is compelling from start to finish--well-written, populated with intriguing multidimensional characters, and with many plot twists leading to a surprise ending. Lisa O'Hara, Univ. of Manitoba Libs., Winnipeg. 368p. LIBRARY JOURNAL, c2014.
