The Ark Storm is coming-a catastrophic weather event that will unleash massive floods and wreak more damage on California than the feared 'Big One.' One man wants to profit from it. Another wants to harness it to wage jihad on American soil. One woman stands in their way: Dr. Gwen Boudain, a brave and brilliant meteorologist. When Boudain notices that her climate readings are off the charts, she turns to Gabriel Messenger for research funding. Messenger's company is working on a program that ionizes water molecules to bring rain on command. Meanwhile, Wall Street suits notice that someone is placing six-month bets on the prospect of an utter apocalypse and begin to investigate. Standing in the shadows is journalist Dan Jacobsen, a former Navy SEAL. War hardened, cynical, and handsome, Jacobsen is a man with his own hidden agenda. Linda Davies's 'Ark Storm' brings together the worlds of finance, scientific innovation, and terrorism in a fast-paced thrill ride that will leave readers gasping.

In her latest thriller, Davies warns of a coming catastrophe that could destroy California more than a devastating earthquake could. An ark storm would cause massive floods and destroy almost 25 percent of the housing in the state, while causing billions of dollars in damage. Could the state survive such a horrendous event? Dr. Gwen Boudain is a meteorologist creating a program that could generate rain when needed. Unknown to her, someone has uncovered her research and wants to unleash an ark storm using her technology. Can Gwen and her friend, a former Navy SEAL, stop the disaster before it hits land? The story line should be terrifying, but it sits like a gray cloud, bogged down by endless descriptions of mundane matters. In addition, the ending feels more like a quick gust of wind than a hurricane. An intriguing premise and some genuine suspense are undercut in the end. Ayers, Jeff. 448p. A plausible and stormy eco-thriller that might presage future events. Meteorologist Gwen Boudain conducts billionaire-funded research on a phenomenon called an ARk storm, in which "atmospheric rivers" dump massive amounts of rain on California. (ARk means Atmospheric River 1000.) Meanwhile, a wealthy Arab schemes to use Gwen's knowledge to unleash a catastrophic storm on America's West Coast--jihad by weather. A storm is coming, that is beyond doubt, but Gwen's discoveries in the wrong hands will make it far worse. So Gwen teams up with ex-SEAL Dan Jacobsen to learn who the bad guys are and stop them if possible. Nonmisogynist readers are going to like Gwen and her cohort, Dan. She is seriously hot, smart, tough--and deadly when necessary. Dan is all of those but is perhaps the lesser of two equals. Never once does Gwen go limp and cry, "Save me, Dan!" In fact, to Dan "she look[s] like a warrior princess" as she bench-presses weights. Oh, and she's a first-class surfer, which is amply demonstrated in exciting fashion. Sexual tension builds between the two without ever drifting into the tawdry. They are both good and likable characters whom readers will happily root for. The plot is solid, never straining credulity. The tale's only negative is the verbosity--one may wonde r if, like Dickens, Davies is being paid by the word. The moisture content in one of the atmospheric rivers is equal to that of 14 Mississippis, she writes. OK, that's impressive. We get it, so don't tell us a half dozen times or more. And get a wheelbarrow to cart away a few loads of adverbs. All in all, though, an exciting and enjoyable book. Read it, and be glad it's only fiction. 448pg. KIRKUS MEDIA LLC, c2014.

Davies (Something Wild) creates a tempest in her newest topical thriller. An extreme storm system called an "ARK Storm" (for Atmospheric River 1000) is a major climatological threat that periodically menaces California. Meteorologist Dr. Gwen Boudain's research is in designing a method that can predict and control this weather system. Her work has proven fruitful, and now her boss intends to profit from the potential storm not only by selling her research to a hostile country but also by developing a process that induces and magnifies the storm into one of torrential downpours--a rainstorm that would lead to massive flooding with accompanying loss of life and property. A breakneck pace heightens the imminence of the catastrophic event as Gwen and Dan Jacobsen, a reporter and former Navy SEAL, race to find the identity and intentions of the buyer. VERDICT The science Davies presents seems plausible and relevant, and the protagonists are intelligent and likable. Readers who enjoy a science thriller along the lines of books by Michael Crichton or James Rollins will snatch this one up. Deb West, Gannon Univ. Lib., Erie, PA. 448p. LIBRARY JOURNAL, c2014.

An atmospheric river storm brewing over the Pacific threatens the California coast with winds over 125 mph in this absorbing eco-thriller from Davies (Nest of Vipers). Meanwhile, meteorologist Gwen Boudain, who has developed a sophisticated computer program called Oracle that precisely models the weather phenomenon known as El Nino, sells part ownership in Oracle to a venture capital company headed by Gabriel Messenger, a hard-driving derivatives trader, and funded by Ali Al Baharna, a tremendously wealthy Middle Eastern sheik. Messenger reveals to Gwen the company's secret innovation: a method of ionizing clouds with drone aircraft that will produce man-made rain. Soon, Gwen must elude assassins and untangle a terrorist conspiracy in time to avert a devastating attack using the new weather technology. Despite goofy plot gyrations and a profusion of expository lumps, Gwen is an appealing character, and the manic energy of Davies's prose drives the story forward to an exciting, if unlikely, climax. Agent: Matthew Carlini, Vigliano Associates. (Aug.). 448p. PUBLISHERS WEEKLY, c2014.
