The search for an allegedly dead heir sends attorney Jack MacTaggart to California's wine country when the distraught Monsieur Giroux suspects his presumably dead son, the only worthy heir to the Chateau Giroux winery who won't give in to a real-estate deal, may still be alive somewhere.

Greaves has turned his irrepressible (or irritating, depending on one's point of view) lawyer Jack MacTaggart loose on the world of family money, trusts, inheritances, and their concomitants--envy, greed, and murder. Alain Giroux, heir to a Napa Valley winery, is missing and presumed dead. His father is in mourning not for his lost son but for the chance that the winery will go to a daughter who will sell it to a developer. The old man hires MacTaggart to sink that possibility, but then Alain's signature turns up on fresh credit-card bills. Then there's a murder, and MacTaggart begins his trek through a world where bad feelings are the only kind that haven't been burned away. Readers may find this parade of jerks wearisome and wish MacTaggart's wisecracks didn't sound like little-guy putdowns, and while Greaves can write beautifully--"her hair glowed like poppies in a summer morning memo"--stretches of dialogue sound like legal briefs. But he's provided a gripping look at a world where great resources and the best intentions can go horribly wrong. Crinklaw, Don. 288p. AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION, c2014.

Who exactly is the last heir to Napa Valley's Chateau Giroux?Even though his son Phil survived an avalanche several months ago, Philippe Giroux is left with several problems. One is that his son Alain didn't. A second is that the family winery, Chateau Giroux, is slated to pass from the hands of Philippe, as trustee, to that of his surviving male heirs when Phil turns 40 in a few months. Another is Philippe's certainty that Phil, under the baneful influence of his wife, Lourdes, plans to sell the winery to developer Andy Clarkson for his Napa Springs Spa and Golf Resort. Still another is a series of posthumous credit-card charges that indicate that Alain is still alive. Los Angeles attorney Jack MacTaggart (Green-Eyed Lady, 2013, etc.) doesn't know much more about wills and estates than he does about fine wines. On the evidence of his recent TV performance, however, Philippe is convinced that Jack's the man for him, and his daughter, Claudia, seals the deal by taking Jack to bed. The hearing to determine whether to declare Alain legally dead ends abruptly, sending Jack scurrying home. But it's not long before he gets another barrage of calls from Claudia and Clarkson begging him to return. Phil has been found floating in a vat of pinot noir, and there's no question at all that he's dead. If you think a case with so few suspects will be simple, think again. Very few readers will be able to identify the last heir.Without ever breaking a sweat, Greaves gives an object lesson in how to work the greatest number of permutations with the smallest number of players. Pray that the man never takes up three-card monte. 288pg. KIRKUS MEDIA LLC, c2014.

Greaves's intrigue-laden third Jack MacTaggart mystery (after 2013's Green-Eyed Lady) takes the Los Angeles-based attorney to Napa Valley to represent Philippe Giroux, an elderly vintner holding the family business in trust for his two sons. One, Alain, is presumed dead in an avalanche; the other, Phil, wants Alain declared legally deceased. If Phil succeeds, he will inherit the Chateau Giroux winery on his upcoming 40th birthday. Philippe, who fears Phil will sell land to a neighboring developer, charges Jack with proving Alain might be alive, to delay the inheritance. Philippe's alluring daughter, Claudia, who's excluded from the trust, seduces Jack and then makes a damaging revelation in court that destroys his case. A murder raises the ante, and Jack must try to defend the accused and identify the real killer amid lies, backstabbing, and convoluted allegations. Some may find the melodramatic climax jarring, but oenophiles should enjoy the Napa Valley flavor, and the legally savvy, irreverent Jack makes a fine tour guide. Agent: Antonella Iannarino, David Black Literary Agency. (June). 288p. PUBLISHERS WEEKLY, c2014.
