A new nightmare sets the Waverly sisters in its crosshairs as Ingrid, whose blood lets her control gargoyles, and her cursed and Dispossessed guardian, Luc, face a threat so powerful that even the Alliance cannot protect Ingrid, Gabby, and Grayson from the horrors to come. It looks like these three are on their own in this sequel to 'The Beautiful and the Cursed.' 368pp.

Grades 7-11. Ingrid and her nineteenth-century, upper-class British family continue to stumble over supernatural beasts and dangers in Paris. Taking up where The Beautiful and the Cursed (2013) stopped, this latest installment will reacquaint readers with Ingrid's status in the supernatural world and with her divided heart. Meanwhile, catastrophes befall her siblings: her twin brother is turning into a werewolf, and her younger sister is afflicted with a permanently scarred face. And then there's teenage Leon, who recently murdered his parents. This stuffed sequel will appeal to fans who are not yet tired of gothic infighting between the dead and the cursed. Goldsmith, Francisca. 368p. Booklist Online. AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION, c2014.

4. This sequel to The Beautiful and the Cursed offers another complex take on angels, demons, and gargoyles. The setting--Paris in 1900--is evocative, and the Waverly siblings' relationship continues to deepen. But the mythology is overly ambitious, and the plot and prose are sprinkled with clichis. Genre fans and those smitten with the first book may want to persevere to the triology's conclusion. ncp. 353pg. THE HORN BOOK, c2014.
Kirkus Reviews | 04/01/2014
The saga of a girl and the gargoyle she loves begun in The Beautiful and the Cursed (2013) continues. Paris in 1900 turns out to be home to a whole catalog of demons that roam the streets and sewers. In the previous book, 17-year-old earl's daughter Ingrid learned that she has both angelic and demonic blood and the ability to create lightning. Her twin brother is a part-time hellhound. Her 16-year old sister, Gabby, just wants to fight demons, although the Alliance, a society that exists to do just that, doesn't want her. Luc, a gargoyle tasked with protecting Ingrid and her family, can't seem to manage that task alone. Worse, Luc has fallen in love with Ingrid, which is forbidden to his kind. As various demons and societies come into conflict in their attempts to capture Ingrid, havoc ensues. Although Morgan weaves the strands of plot together more convincingly than in the first installment, she still demands a lot of readers. They will be amazed that society girls in long dresses and corsets can sword fight so well. In fact, the historical setting appears to exist solely for atmosphere. Most characters, especially Ingrid and Gabby, behave as fully modern 21st-century people, and the entire plot would have worked as well in a contemporary setting. Cliches abound: Everyone is beautiful; kisses burn; true love seems preordained. For fans only. (Paranormal suspense. 12-18). 368pg. KIRKUS MEDIA LLC, c2014.
~VOYA (Voice of Youth Advocates Magazine - Retired Journal) | 06/01/2014
4Q 4P J S. The second volume in Morgan's Dispossessed series, this sequel to The Beautiful and the Cursed (Random House, 2013/VOYA June 2013) continues the fin de siecle adventures of the Waverly sisters, Gabby and Ingrid, a paranormal pair who, along with their brother, Grayson, must join with the Alliance in Paris to fend off demons while living with angel blood coursing through their veins; work with live gargoyles, one of whom becomes a love interest; and participate in many more complex adventures. The cast of characters is fascinating yet convoluted--but bound to please teen readers. Special powers bestowed on the "Dusters," such as the "lectrux" ability to create lightning, arm them with the ability to overcome evil in a familiar theme that remains timeless. An older mentor guides them, an evil angel threatens, other beings hunt them, and the gargoyles protect them. The book provides a different take on standard vampire fare and draws the reader in from the very first pages. The book is reminiscent of Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, and other more recently written fantasy series in that the young protagonists must collaborate, solve problems, fight, overcome obstacles, fall in love, and move forward to adulthood within the context of this elaborately constructed mystery. A little bit of the Hunchback of Notre Dame's tale endears readers to grotesque gargoyles and, indeed, moves them to fall in love with them. In other words, teens will eat it up.--Jane Murphy. 368p. VOICE OF YOUTH ADVOCATES, c2014.
