These are more than just blackouts. Answers come from a local church, where Cyn meets Avian and learns that her time in Sleepy Hollow has turned her into a medium for the dead. To stop the blackouts, Cyn must destroy the source of this great power. It's time to go back to Sleepy Hollow in this spin-off of 'The Hollow.' 272pp.

Horn Book Guide | 05/01/2014
4. Cyn fled Sleepy Hollow after apparently killing her boyfriend during a blackout, and his revenge-seeking brother Declan has tracked Cyn down. Meanwhile, Revenant Avian recognizes that Cyn is an "Echo," someone possessed by the dead. Avian and Cyn's mutual-dislike-turned-romance feels forced, and readers will need a strong recall of Verday's Hollow trilogy to make full sense of this companion's mythology; still, the premise is intriguing. klb. 266pg. THE HORN BOOK, c2014.
Kirkus Reviews | 10/01/2013
Despite its title, this companion to Verday's Hollow trilogy comes across more as a thriller than a soap opera. While some knowledge of the previous series certainly would help, new readers will find enough background information to glean the basics. Cyn tries not to sin, but she can't help it. She's an Echo, a human who serves as a host for a series of souls that inhabit her body and sometimes take over to do murder, or so Cyn believes. Enter Avian, the 13th Revenant, shunned by both demonic and angelic Revenants. (Revenants are otherworldly figures that help the living "cross over.") Avian spends his time dispatching supernatural baddies, the protege of benevolent Father Montgomery. Meanwhile, Cyn, working as a waitress, tries to avoid Declan, the brother of her former boyfriend, Hunter, whom Cyn believes she murdered in one of her blackouts. Avian balances his emotions and his duty to fight supernatural evil, even as he finds himself falling for Cyn. The supernatural lore lies thick on the ground, but the author keeps the narrative flowing nicely. Cyn's all-night waitress job in the dumpy little diner adds some welcome realism amid the paranormal elements. Complete with a hellhound, demons and a vintage motorcycle, this paranormal thriller supplies plenty of entertainment. (Paranormal thriller. 14 & up). 272pg. KIRKUS MEDIA LLC, c2013.

Gr 9 Up. Sixteen-year-old Cyn Hargrave escapes Sleepy Hollow after waking up to find herself covered in blood and her boyfriend, Hunter, dead. Hiding out in a small town in upstate New York, she soons discovers that she can manipulate others, prompting them to loan her a car or buy her alcohol and cigarettes. Suffering strange blackouts, haunted by an evil spirit named Vincent, and on the run from Hunter's ex-cop brother, Cyn makes an unlikely friend in Avian, a half-angel, half-demon. Together, they try to break her connection with dead souls and unravel the mystery of her blackouts. Fans of Verday's "The Hollows" trilogy (S & S) will enjoy this dark, supernatural companion. Strong language and alcohol use may make this book a more suitable choice for older teens. Karen Alexander, Lake Fenton High School, Linden, MI. 266p. SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL, c2014.
